Dining Like a Local: My Favorite Viennese Restaurants
1. Mariahilfer Bräu
A stone’s throw from us. If you are looking for a cozy, rustic atmosphere and a refreshing local beer, this is the place. It’s a traditional “Bräuhaus” where the portions are generous and the vibe is unpretentious.
-
My recommendation: Try the classic Wiener Schnitzel or their hearty roasts. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed dinner after a long day of sightseeing.
-
Vibe: Traditional, lively, and very local.
2. Gasthaus Quell
The heart of our district. This is a true “Wirtshaus” (tavern) that has preserved its character for decades. Located just around the corner, Gasthaus Quell is famous among locals for its excellent quality and honest prices.
-
My recommendation: Their Goulash is outstanding, and the seasonal specials never disappoint. It feels like stepping into a Viennese living room from a simpler time.
-
Vibe: Authentic, quiet, and charmingly old-school.
3. Plachutta Gasthaus zur Oper
Tradition in the city center. While the main Plachutta is world-famous for Tafelspitz, I particularly enjoy their “Gasthaus zur Oper” near the Opera House. It is slightly more casual than the main restaurant but maintains the same impeccable standards of Austrian cuisine.
-
My recommendation: You cannot leave Vienna without trying the Tafelspitz (boiled beef). It’s a ritual here, served with apple horseradish and chive sauce.
-
Vibe: Elegant yet welcoming, ideal for a special evening downtown.
